How To Get Registered To Vote

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I register to vote?

Registering to vote is incredibly easy in Iowa. If you visit the Secretary of State’s website you can download a voter registration form to mail in, or you can also find your local county auditor’s office and register in person. Iowa also allows residents to register to vote on Election Day at the polls and for more information on what you’ll need to do that, go here.

How do I know if I am registered?

You can use the Secretary of State’s website to check your voter registration status here.

If I am originally from another state but I am going to college in Iowa can I still register here?

Yes, as long as you currently maintain residence in Iowa you are eligible to vote. When you fill out your registration form simply use your current college address, such as your apartment or dorm. If you have previously registered to vote in your home state be sure to provide that information as well in the space provided.

If I am an Iowa resident going to college in another state can I still vote in Iowa?

Yes, if you are registered to vote in your hometown you can request an absentee ballot to be mailed to you at your college address. For more information on absentee balloting, visit the Secretary of State’s website.

If I am an Iowa resident going to college in Iowa but not in the same town I grew up in, where do I vote?

You can vote in either your hometown or your college town. If you wish to vote in your hometown you can remain registered there and request an absentee ballot but if you wish to vote in your college town you must re-register at your new address.

Where do I vote?

To find out what precinct you live in and what polling location you will be voting at, visit the Secretary of State’s office here.
